As wonderful as sports are, injuries are an all-too-common part of training. When you or your child are injured, it’s good to know where to go for help.

Whether you rolled your ankle running or your child broke their arm playing basketball, Oxford Urgent Care can help. We’re open 7 days a week for convenient walk-in visits, and we’re fully equipped to treat a variety of sports injuries in people of all ages.

What Are Common Sports Injuries?

Urgent care can provide rapid treatment for a variety of non-life-threatening sports injuries. Here are some of the most common.

Cut and Bruises

Some minor cuts and bruises can be treated at home. Washing the cut with clean water and applying a bandage and antibiotic ointment can sometimes be enough.

For more serious cuts, getting help at urgent care is important to ensure proper healing. See a provider if your cut:

  • Is bleeding after holding pressure for 10 minutes.
  • Is deep or gaping.
  • Has an object stuck in or around it.
  • Is on your neck, face, or a sensitive area.
  • Was caused by something rusty or dirty.
  • If your wound develops signs of infection (redness, swelling, ongoing pain, oozing).

Bruises often can be cared for at home. Applying ice and elevating the site can help with discomfort. Get help at urgent care for a bruise if:

  • It’s swelling.
  • It’s spreading.
  • It happened without a known cause or if you develop multiple bruises.
  • You take a blood thinner.

Sprains and Strains

Strains and sprains are among the most common sports injuries in adults and children. They can happen in almost any sport or fitness activity.

A sprain involves injury to the ligaments that hold bones together at joints. Ankles, wrists, and fingers are common sites of injury. A strain refers to an injury to a muscle.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Pain in a joint or muscle.
  • Swelling.
  • Difficulty bearing weight or walking.
  • Feeling a tear or popping sensation.
  • Increased pain with movement.

If you’ve had a sprain or strain, apply ice and elevate your injury. Urgent care can evaluate your injury and get you the treatment you need.

Minor Fractures

Fractures, or broken bones, are another common sports injury, typically involving the bones of the arms or legs. Symptoms may include:

  • Significant pain.
  • Swelling.
  • Inability to walk or use the affected limb.

While compound fractures (fractures where the bone breaks through the skin), fractures from major trauma, or fractures involving significant bleeding should be cared for in an ER, urgent care is an excellent choice for comprehensive treatment for minor fractures.

Does Urgent Care Treat Sports Injuries?

When you need care for a sports injury, the last thing you want to do is wait for an appointment. Primary care clinics can often be booked out far in advance, and emergency rooms are often unnecessary for minor injuries and tend to involve long wait times.

Urgent care offers rapid, comprehensive injury care when you need it. Onsite diagnostic tools and experienced providers ensure you and your family can get the treatment you need right away.
