All it takes it one instance of food poisoning, and you practically become an expert in spotting it.

You know the telltale signs: vomiting, diarrhea, and extreme stomach cramps.

While these are only a few of the symptoms you may encounter, they’re some of the most common signs of a classic case of food poisoning. Although food poisoning often feels like a death sentence at the onset, symptoms usually clear up within a few days.

Not sure what to look for or how to treat food poisoning? We’ve got you covered.

In this post, we’ll review the most common symptoms and provide a few tips so you can get better on your own.

Symptoms of Food Poisoning

Here are some of the most common symptoms of food poisoning:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach cramps and other extreme types of pain
  • Vomit or stool that has blood in it
  • A fever over 101.5 degrees

If you notice any of the above symptoms, you’ll need some solid remedies for food poisoning.

Luckily, we’ll outline a few of them below, so you can overcome it and get back to enjoying your life.

Food Poisoning Treatment

In most cases, the treatment process for food poisoning is fairly simple.

Start by following the steps below, and if the condition persists after several days, contact your doctor. If you’re exhibiting symptoms of dehydration, you may need to undergo I.V. fluid hydration to reverse the effects of dehydration.

Isolate Yourself

The first step in treating your food poisoning after you’ve eaten bad foods is to keep yourself from passing it on to someone else and perpetuating the cycle.

If you’re able to stay away from any roommates, friends, or family members you may live or work in close proximity to, stay away from them.

Clean up the Scene

Start by washing your hands. Then, clean each of the areas you’ve spent time in with bleach. Thoroughly.

If anyone aside from you is still at home, have them wash their hands and leave the premises if possible.

Drink Up

You’re probably at least a little bit dehydrated, so when you begin to feel like you can keep something down, drink some Gatorade, water, or another liquid to rehydrate your body and replenish any electrolytes you may have lost in your battle with food poisoning.

Give It a Few Days

Most cases of food poisoning pass on their own after a few days. Once you’ve managed to complete the steps above, give yourself some time to get better.

Rest up as much as you can. If your symptoms haven’t lessened after a few days, it may be time to call your doctor.
