Every year, between 11,000 and 13,000 cases of strep throat are reported in the United States.
Many people who contract strep throat get sick once and then feel better within a few days of starting antibiotics. For some people, though, the sickness comes back again and again.
Could this be happening to you? In order to tell if you’re suffering from recurring strep throat, keep reading. Listed below are some of the most common strep throat symptoms.
If you’re repeatedly experiencing these symptoms, you’re likely dealing with a recurring illness.
1. Sore Throat
A sore throat is the most common symptom of strep throat.
With strep, the sore throat comes on suddenly and is characterized by a sharp pain, as opposed to a throat that feels scratchy or dry, as is usually the case when someone just has a cold.
2. High Fever
Many people also develop a fever when they have strep throat. A fever that is 101 degrees or higher is cause for concern.
3. Swollen Lymph Nodes
The lymph nodes in the neck and armpits often become swollen, as well. If they’re swollen, you will be able to feel and possibly see lumps in the neck or under the arms. The lymph nodes may also be tender to the touch.
4. Red and Swollen Tonsils
The tonsils, which are a type of lymph node, may become red and swollen, too. You may notice white spots that develop on them, as well.
5. Rash
Some people with strep throat develop a red rash. This rash usually starts on the face and neck, but it can spread to the rest of the body if the strep is not treated right away.
Recurring Strep Throat Treatment and Prevention
As soon as you notice these symptoms, the first step you should take is to visit a doctor right away.
Schedule an appointment at an urgent care clinic if you can’t get in to see your regular doctor the same day your symptoms start.
The doctor at the urgent care clinic will prescribe antibiotics, which are necessary for killing off the bacteria that causes strep throat.
Make sure you take your antibiotics as prescribed to fully get rid of the bacteria and minimize your risk of experiencing recurring strep throat. Many people experience recurring strep throat because they don’t finish taking their antibiotics.
Another way to prevent recurring strep throat is to throw away your toothbrush after you’ve been diagnosed is strep. Disinfect your toothbrush holder, too. This will help you protect you from being exposed to the bacteria again.
